Deafening Silence – Short Film
Genre: drama
Running time: 8 minutes
Year of production: 2022
Synopsis: a day-in-the-life of a young deaf adult, from his social struggles to his unique sensory experience.
This project marked my debut short film. Having partial deafness in my left ear, this short drama tackles a thematic dear to me: deafness.
One crucial aspect of this project was casting a deaf actor, to bring inclusivity and realism to the story. This resulted in the casting of deaf actor Alex Novak, who gave an amazing performance. His inclusion during the shoot proved challenging, but everything ran smoothly due to thorough organisation and clear communication.
Post-production also played a major role to embody profound deafness. As the project was supervised by London Film School, I received extensive editing masterclasses. This permitted me to play with sound mixing in order to create an immersive auditive representation of deafness.
This short film formed part of my Bachelor’s project at the University of Warwick.
Grade awarded: 74% (first-class).
